Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Margarita Esquiroz will retire in September after more than a year of medical leave for what friends have called a harrowing battle with brain cancer.

Esquiroz, who spent 25 years on the bench, notified Gov. Charlie Crist this month that she will resign effective Sept. 30. She did not return calls for comment by deadline.
