Love is love. This month people across the country honored love with Pride Month celebrations. It may seem like love associated with the sanctity of marriage and loss of love in divorce have been a long-time universal right for all couples across the United States, but that has not been the case. It was only in 2015, as the result of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Obergefell v. Hodges, that same-sex marriage became legal in all 50 states. The ruling allowed same-sex couples to enter a nationally and legally recognized and protected marital union and enjoy the same rights, benefits, and responsibilities as heterosexual couples.

All couples, regardless of sexual orientation, will experience issues throughout their relationship. Finding common ground on issues such as lack of intimacy, being in different stages of life, stress due to work, family, and money problems can either be an opportunity to create a deeper bond with your partner or result in irreconcilable differences. With the national divorce rate continuing to hover around 50%, a high percentage of conflicts lead to divorce. As with marriage equality, married gay couples have the same right to divorce as straight couples, but they may face complications around the legal dissolution of their marriage, division of assets and parental rights.
