It is not what you do next, but more importantly, how quickly you adapt to a new environment. Like most of us, we had huge dreams for the year 2020. We had our minds set on making it the best year ever. At that time, I worked in one of the most prominent law firms in Florida, and the sky was the limit. But things changed very quickly. The COVID-19 pandemic arrived in full force, and things did not start going in the right direction. So, I decided to move on and find a new law firm to continue my legal career.

Usually, you would send 100 resumes and attend 40 in-person interviews. In a typical scenario or a normal year, that does not sound like a huge burden because South Florida’s legal market is big, and there are plenty of opportunities out there. But 2020 was not a typical scenario or a normal year, and it was during July and August 2020 when I started searching for a new law firm. There were no in-person interviews, partners were not even at their offices, law firms were not making much money, and some of them were either downsizing or furloughing their employees. To put it in context, it was the worst time ever to be looking for a legal job—or any job for that matter. And here I was, trying to keep my American Dream alive with minimal options.
