In 2003, Michael R. Moebes, then a third-year law student at Georgia State University, served five months in the Persian Gulf with the Tennessee Air National Guard. Through e-mails, he kept a journal about his time, mostly working at an air base in Balad, Iraq, where he helped coordinate air transport of wounded soldiers. The Daily Report published a three-day series on his experience in the war zone.

After returning to the U.S., Moebes graduated from GSU, became an associate at Drew Eckl & Farnham and in early 2007, joined the in-house legal team at Liberty Mutual Group.
