A federal judge in Texas ordered Microsoft to pay an additional $25 million in punitive damages and $2.3 million in attorney fees to a tiny software company because of litigation misconduct.

On Friday, Judge Leonard Davis of the Eastern District of Texas handed down a 50-page ruling that lists examples of Microsoft’s litigation misconduct. That formed the basis for the court’s findings, that the case was exceptional enough to warrant an award for attorney fees, and that there had been a willfulness that triggered enhanced damages awarded to Michigan-based Z4 Technologies Inc.
