It looks like 2017 is already proving to be a difficult year for some of the nation’s largest retailers: Sears Holdings Corp. announced on Thursday that it plans to close 150 stores across the country, including 108 Kmart locations, affecting an undisclosed number of employees. The announcement came only a day after Macy’s Inc. disclosed that it intends to close 65 stores nationwide by mid-2017, at least 3,900 employees. That’s on top of more than 6,000 jobs Macy’s already announced last year that it would trim.

These and other mass retail store closings will certainly keep attorneys busy with work that ranges from getting out of real estate contracts, to staying compliant with a patchwork of state employment laws.
