One month after American Apparel’s general counsel took over as the CEO of the company, the company’s former chief executive is revealing just how bad of a workplace culture it was for her.

In an interview with Fortune last week, Paula Schneider said she received death threats and was shown a YouTube video of employees beating a piñata meant to represent her. The situation got so bad that Schneider hired a bodyguard to go to work, she said.
