Audrey Boone Tillman recently received an email message from one of her outside lawyers informing her of pending legislation that could affect the insurance industry. Tillman, the executive VP and general counsel at Aflac Inc., a provider of supplemental insurance in the United States and Japan, was already aware of the proposed law. But she still appreciated the gesture.

That sort of intimate knowledge of the company is what she looks for in outside counsel, she says. “It’s important for these lawyers to know the issues that might be on my plate,” she says. “and the concerns that keep me up at night.”
