Prominent Los Angeles litigator David Quinto raised some eyebrows in August when he left Davis Wright Tremaine to become the first-ever general counsel of an obscure startup in Utah called VidAngel, which lets customers filter sexual, profanity and objectionable content from streaming movies. Now he’s opening up about what led him to that unusual career move.

In an interview with Corporate Counsel, Quinto said that after leaving Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan in 2014, he briefly worked for a small firm called Kupferstein Manuel & Quinto. That’s where he first began advising VidAngel. A year later, he moved to Davis Wright because he wanted to be at a bigger firm. “I thought being with a larger firm that had offices in a number of locations would be an advantage in finding the kind of work that really interested me,” he says.
