Creating greater diversity within the legal department is a task that many general counsel have been grappling with for years. But perhaps not so common is a legal team that sets an annual diversity goal for its outside counsel. That’s precisely what Home Depot’s GC Teresa Wynn Roseborough has done.

Roseborough joined a legal department in 2011 that she felt was already diverse by standards of both gender and ethnicity. Even so, she asked herself, “What can we do better?” On that department self-improvement list, Roseborough decided to make it a priority for Home Depot to choose outside law firms that value diversity.
