The Dole Food Co. Inc. has a major legal and public relations mess on its hands after admitting last week to being under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice for selling contaminated food that sickened more than 30 people and killed four.

A listeria outbreak that occurred between May 2015 and this January has been traced back to a Dole salad plant in Springfield, Ohio. What’s even more damning is that, according to a Food and Drug Administration report obtained by Food Safety News, the company knew about the listeria from testing done in 2014 and 2015 but still failed to stop distributing the contaminated food until Jan. 21.
