Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has recently thrust the U.S. trade deficit into the headlines. But David Weller, former assistant general counsel for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and now head of Google Inc.’s global trade policy, argues in a recent blog post that the Internet is changing international trade forever—and for the better.

International trade is no longer just about big container ships and massive warehouses around the world, says Weller, who was out of the office this week and unavailable for comment. Today, his blog post explains, it’s more about millions of large and small businesses as well as individuals reaching an audience of some 1.9 billion people with just the touch of a computer button.
