When a Japanese patent aggregator filed an infringement suit against Broadcom Ltd last month, it appeared at first glance to be just another case of a patent assertion entity attempting to monetize its holdings through litigation.

But it turns out there was something different about the plaintiff. The principal backer of the company that brought the suit is a foreign government, making it what’s known in intellectual property circles as a sovereign patent fund (SPF).
