You might not have heard of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., but it’s a massive company with a presence across the globe. Its legal department alone comprises about 80 people from the United States, Germany, Greece, China and, of course, Taiwan. In a recent interview with the Association of Corporate Counsel, TSMC general counsel Sylvia Fang explained how she manages such a spread-out, global group.

To make sure there’s cohesion, Fang schedules conference calls at a time when all team members can dial in, regardless of their time zone. She also hosts quarterly in-person meetings in Taiwan and asks the U.S. and European colleagues to attend. TSMC also arranges internal two-year rotations within the legal department. English is the default language. “It’s always better when people can meet and talk in person,” Fang told ACC.
