E-commerce company Etsy Inc. and check-in app company Foursquare Labs Inc. are clearly technology-driven companies. But the leaders of their relatively small legal departments admit they could do more to embrace technology. At a panel discussion on Thursday, the companies’ general counsel explained how they handle the familiar balancing act of leading a company that is both innovative and compliant.

During a panel titled “A Day in the Life: The Role of the Digital Age General Counsel,” Etsy GC Jordan Breslow and Foursquare Labs GC Brian Chase shared their gripes about the technology they use today, as well as their recommendations for what products other small legal departments should be considering. Dana Rosen, GC of Corporate Counsel parent company ALM Media Inc. and former GC with Rolling Stone parent company Wenner Media, was also a panelist.
