The number of patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office declined in 2015, the first downturn since 2007.

According to IFI Claims Patent Services, which analyzes patent data and releases an annual ranking of the top 50 U.S. patent recipients, the PTO granted 298,407 utility patents last year. This is a decrease of just under 1 percent compared to 2014, when the PTO granted 300,674 patents, the first time the number surpassed 300,000.
