San Francisco retailers have some hefty new restrictions to follow, and other companies in California, Maryland, Minnesota, New York and Oregon better keep a close watch because they could be next. The ordinances are known as the Retail Workers Bill of Rights, and Andrew McIlvaine in Human Resource Executive Online notes they will affect 40,000 employees at stores, restaurants, movie theaters and hotels with 20 or more employees.

“Businesses covered by the law will be required to, among other things, notify workers of their schedules at least two weeks in advance, [and] offer more hours to their existing part-time workers before hiring new ones,” among other obligations, explains McIlvaine. They also will be required to compensate on-call workers when their shifts are canceled within 24 hours.
