The American Bar Association has adopted the “Model Workplace Policy on Employer Responses to Domestic Violence, Sexual Violence, Dating Violence and Stalking,” according to Daniel Schwartz of Shipman & Goodwin. The policy’s stated purpose is to enhance workplace awareness of these issues and create a supportive and safe work environment for victims of violence and other employees. It also “presents a model policy from which employers may develop their own workplace protocols and procedures.”

Schwartz says this policy is not required for employers (though Connecticut law dictates employers must provide domestic violence leave) and he says there’s no civil liability attached to not having it. However, he says that by adopting it, employers are demonstrating that they take the issues seriously, and it also may encourage victims to speak up.
