Facebook’s privacy problems in Germany are back in the “active” column after a government regulatory body announced Wednesday that it was re-opening an investigation into the social-media giant’s facial-recognition technology.

The technology in question—Photo Tag Suggest—analyzes photos uploaded by users to Facebook and automatically matches faces to member accounts on the service. The California-based company introduced facial recognition in December 2010 as a benefit to its users, announcing in a blog post:

While tags are an essential tool for sharing important moments, many of you have said tagging photos can be a chore. . .

When you or a friend upload new photos, we use face recognition software—similar to that found in many photo editing tools—to match your new photos to other photos you’re tagged in. We group similar photos together and, whenever possible, suggest the name of the friend in the photos.
