As part of my morning commute, I scan the news head lines on my iPhone. Today’s main item of interest comes from my ancestral country, Italy, and involves three executives of Google Inc. They were convicted of violating Italy’s strict privacy law, and The New York Times reported that Google called the verdict an “astonishing” attack on freedom of expression on the Internet.

I also found out this morning that Morgan Stanley is shuffling the lineup of its legal department. General counsel Gary Lynch (a former cover subject as the top GC earner of 2007) is stepping down. Big name, pretty big change, but what I found interesting was this: Lynch isn’t leaving the company—he’ll be the investment bank’s main point guy for dealing with European regulators.
