After a spat with the U.S. pay czar over executive pay cuts, Anastasia Kelly resigned on Dec. 31 as general counsel for embattled and vilified insurance giant American International Group, Inc.

Now Kelly has spoken with Fortune Magazine about why she left, her plans for the future, and what it was like working for AIG during one of the most dramatic and difficult times in America’s economic history.
