Filings of prepackaged bankruptcies—deals that companies and creditors hammer out before heading to bankruptcy court—have tripled so far this year, according to a bankruptcy research group.

Thirty prepackaged bankruptcies out of 164 Chapter 11 filings by public companies have been filed this year as of Nov. 9, according to the BankruptcyData.com division of New Generation Research Inc. in Boston.
