Back in 1979, Mary Ann Hynes became the first female general counsel of a Fortune 500 company. Now, she’s leaving big law for the Archdiocese of Chicago, which on Jan. 8 named her its new GC.

Hynes comes to the archdiocese from the Chicago office of Dentons, where she was a senior counsel specializing in governance and compliance. She started her legal career at CCH Inc. (formerly Commerce Clearing House Inc.), where she became GC in 1979 at age 32, according to a 2011 profile in Inside Counsel. She also spent seven years at Ingredion Inc. as senior vice president, GC and chief compliance officer.
