It’s 2016 and it seems like there are 2,016 new employment laws. “States and local government are imposing broad obligations on employers well above what federal law requires,” according to this recent blog post by lawyers at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. Here are some of the major changes to expect across the country:

• Minimum wage: Fourteen states and cities raised their minimum wage at the start of 2016, including Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York. “While there are no signs that the federal minimum wage will surpass the current $7.25 level, cities and states will continue to lead the trend of minimum wage increases throughout 2016,” say the Orrick lawyers. In February, Tacoma, Washington, plans to raise its wage, with several cities in California following suit in the summer, including Los Angeles and San Francisco.
