The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Tuesday named Hope Shimabuku, an intellectual property attorney and engineer, as the first director of the PTO’s Texas regional office.

Shimabuku, who will assume the post in January, is a Texas native with 20 years of experience. Most recently she was part of the Office of General Counsel at Xerox Corp., serving as vice president and corporate counsel responsible for all intellectual property matters for Xerox Business Services, LLC. She previously worked for BlackBerry, advising on U.S. and Chinese standards setting, cybersecurity, technology transfer, and IP laws and legislation. Before working as an attorney she was an engineer for Procter & Gamble and Dell Computer Corp.
