There were 148,000 people denied H-1B visas in this year’s lottery for the nonimmigrant visa, which allows companies to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations, according to Lisa Shapira of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo. So what are the other options for your company? Here is Shapira’s take:

• TN visa: This is a good bet for citizens of Canada and Mexico and allows them to work in the United States under the North American Free Trade Agreement. However, it is limited to 63 professions only. “From accountants to zoologists, the professions cover a wide range, but the required credentials for each can vary from bachelor’s degrees to work experience,” she says.
