Amid several executive changes, Toyota Motor Corp. (TMC) Thursday promoted Christopher Reynolds, previously general counsel of its U.S. subsidiary, to the newly created position of GC and chief legal officer for the global corporation, as well as a managing officer.

Reynolds, who is the first African-American named to these positions globally, helped lead the world’s largest automaker through the recent scandal over its deadly accelerating cars, the subsequent federal criminal probe and a deferred prosecution agreement last year. He was often Toyota’s spokesman in news stories at the time, and he helped lead the company’s strategy against victims’ lawsuits seeking hundreds of millions of dollars.
