This session will explore new applications of legal technology tools for identifying sensitive data, such as personally identifiable information, banking information, and healthcare records, and redacting, anonymizing or otherwise remediating that information.

This session will delve into these international data protection laws, foreign blocking statutes, and choice-of-law issues and how they impact legal matters in the U.S.

Leaders of law firms and law departments alike often lament their inability to get buy-in from partners and staff on anything from new technologies and processes to new business structures. Their jobs are as much psychologists as lawyers. We walk through two case studies, from a law firm and a law department, to highlight what successful change management looks like in action.

The collection and analysis of data by law firms and clients is nothing new, but there is still a big disconnect in what clients want from data and what law firms are doing with it. That means a big opportunity for firms.

Much is said about how much, or how little, impact alternative legal services providers will have on traditional providers and the market share for legal services. How much of a threat do they pose to law firms? What clients are hiring them and what is their strategy?

There are concerted efforts in several states to loosen the restrictions on who can practice law or have an ownership stake in law firms. How are these efforts different than ones in the past? What do law firms in those states have to say about it? What do regulators have to say? Are clients in favor?

For 40 years, The American Lawyer, its affiliate publications and ALM Intelligence’s Legal Compass have been collecting data on law firms, clients and providers. What does the data tell us about where the industry is headed? We will take a deep dive into our data and others’ to assess the state of the industry and its future.

This emerging technology session will take participants through basic emoji meanings, hidden and otherwise, discuss newly-available technology helping target risky communications containing emojis and charged words, outline how lawyers can quickly investigate the substance of the issues at hand, and explain how courts have addressed emojis to date.

This CLE session, presented by experienced global privacy and e-discovery attorneys and technologists, will discuss how to design processes and leverage technology to remain compliant and secure while meeting the needs of the case.
