40 Years of Data: What the Data on the Industry Says About Its Future

Before entering the legal tech industry in 2006, Maya Markovich worked in behavioral science, change management consulting and civil litigation. Since leaving the practice of law, she has honed her skills as a subject matter expert at the intersection of law and technology.

Maya currently leads the selection, development, launch and implementation of external early-stage legal tech for NextLaw Labs. She delivers next-generation technology, process, client and business growth services across the globe for the Dentons ecosystem, including growth of legal tech startups in the portfolio of investment arm, Nextlaw Ventures. She aims to build future-proof methodologies and tech to advance the legal industry, its clients and consumers via achievable, sustainable and scalable design and implementation. Collaborating with legal tech communities and experts worldwide, she continually evolves Nextlaw Labs' partnership and investment strategies. She was named one of ABA Legal Technology Resource Center's "Women of Legal Tech 2018” for her work in encouraging, designing and implementing the future of the legal profession around the globe.

Daniel W. Linna Jr. has a joint appointment at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law and McCormick School of Engineering as the Director of Law and Technology Initiatives and a Senior Lecturer. Dan’s teaching and research focus on innovation and technology, including computational law, artificial intelligence, data analytics, leadership, operations, and innovation frameworks.

Dan is also an affiliated faculty member at CodeX — The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics. He joined Northwestern as a Visiting Professor of Law from Michigan State University College of Law, where he was a Professor of Law in Residence and the founder and Director of LegalRnD — The Center for Legal Services Innovation. At Michigan State, Dan taught Quantitative Analysis for Lawyers, Litigation {Data, Theory, Practice, & Process}, Entrepreneurial Lawyering, and Lawyer Ethics and Regulation in a Technology-Driven World. He has also been a visiting professor at Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, Germany, where he has taught Computational Law and Rules-Driven Automation, and an adjunct professor at IE Law School in Madrid, Spain, where he has taught Assessing Artificial Intelligence and Computational Technologies. Dan has also been an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan Law School, where he has taught Negotiation as well as Legal Technology & Innovation: Legal-Service Delivery in the 21st Century.

Dan began his legal career with a one-year judicial clerkship for U.S. Court of Appeals Judge James L. Ryan. After his clerkship, he joined Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn, an Am Law 200 firm headquartered in Detroit. Dan was a litigator and member of Honigman's Automotive and Manufacturing; e-Discovery and Information Management; Commercial Transactions; and Social, Mobile, and Emerging Media groups. In 2013, Dan was elected equity partner.

Dan received his BA from the University of Michigan, received a second BA and an MA in public policy and administration from Michigan State University, and graduated magna cum laude, Order of the Coif from the University of Michigan Law School.

Before law school, Dan was an information technology manager, developer, and consultant. His work included computerizing and automating business processes, developing dynamic, data-driven websites, and building enterprise information systems.

Dan co-founded the Chicago Legal Innovation & Technology meetup group in 2014. He was named to the 2015 Fastcase 50 as a person who has charted a new course for the delivery of legal services. In 2018, Dan was inducted as a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management and named an ABA Journal Legal Rebel. He is Vice Chair of the Legal Analytics Committee of the ABA Business Law Section. Dan is also a co-founder and co-director of the Institute for the Future of Law Practice.

Patrick Fuller is the Vice President and General Manager of ALM Legal Intelligence. He has spent the last 20 years of this career in the legal industry, holding a variety of business development, consulting, and senior leadership roles. Prior to joining ALM, he served as the VP of Business Development for AI start-up Neota Logic, and previous to that was the Director of Legal Analytics for Wolters Kluwer’s ELM Solutions, working with legal departments to define, measure, and take action on key performance indicators for legal departments and operations. His career also includes stints with Martindale-Hubbell, Thomson Reuters, Hildebrandt Consulting, and LawVision Group. He is a frequent author and speaker, with over 200 speaking and authorship credits within the legal industry.

Gina Passarella is editor-in-chief of The American Lawyer. She has covered the business of law for her entire career, first as a reporter and special projects editor with The Legal Intelligencer in Pennsylvania and then as senior editor for business of law in ALM's global newsroom. She took over as editor-in-chief of The American Lawyer in January 2017.

James W. Jones is a Senior Fellow and Director of the Program on Trends in Law Practice at the Center on Ethics and the Legal Profession at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. He is also Principal of Legal Management Resources LLC, a consulting firm providing management and leadership resources for law firms around the world.

Mr. Jones is widely recognized as an expert on the U.S. and global legal markets, having spent more than 40 years as a practicing lawyer, a law firm leader, a corporate general counsel, and a management consultant. He frequently works with law firms and their leaders on issues of strategy, governance, compensation, succession planning, and risk management. He is the author of numerous books and articles on legal management topics and is also a frequent speaker on these subjects. From 1986 to 1995, Mr. Jones served as the Managing Partner of Arnold & Porter, which he helped grow from a local Washington, D.C. firm to one with a major national presence. From 1995 to 2000, he was Vice Chairman and General Counsel of APCO Worldwide, a global public affairs and government relations firm, initially started as a subsidiary of Arnold & Porter. From 2001 to 2011, Mr. Jones was Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Hildebrandt International (later Hildebrandt Baker Robbins), a leading management consulting firm to the legal industry that was, through most of this period, part of Thomson Reuters Corporation.

James received his Bachelor's Degree magna cum laude from Trinity University and his J.D. cum laude from New York University School of Law.

Dan DiPietro, Principal of Dan DiPietro Consulting LLC, advises a select group of law firms on growth strategies, governance, and financial performance improvements. He is also a Senior Advisor to McKinsey & Co. in its law firm practice.

Dan is former Chairman of Citi Private Bank’s Law Firm Group (LFG), a business dedicated to serving the financial needs of over 650 law firms and 30,000 of their lawyers. Dan spent almost thirty years studying the evolution of the legal industry while at Citi. During his time leading LFG, he oversaw expansion into a number of markets in the US (Boston, Philadelphia, Houston and Dallas in Texas, Palo Alto, and Orange County) and the opening of its London office. He informally advised a number of firms during his time at Citi on combinations and acquisitions and gained valuable insights from law firm failures where Citi was the sole or lead bank.

Dan holds a B.A. from St. John’s University and an M.B.A. from Columbia University. He is on the faculty of Harvard Law School’s Leadership in Law Firms program.
