Augmented reality (AR) burst into the popular culture this summer with the popularity of "Pokemon Go" on smartphones. But AR will go far beyond a children's video game - it can change how we design environments, watch sports, or even learn. This program will examine where AR is going and the legal issues (privacy, security, and torts) that will be part of the future.

Katherine E. Lewis

Meister Seelig & Fein LLP

Katherine E. Lewis concentrates her practice areas in Information Technology, New Media, and Visual Arts. She works with technology and security firms, entertainment service providers, artists, writers, art foundations, museums and other cultural organizations and not for profit organizations.

Prior to joining Meister Seelig & Fein LLP, Ms. Lewis was an Attorney-Advisor in the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Contracting. While at the Smithsonian, Ms. Lewis advised and negotiated agreements for a variety of museums and central business offices in diverse subject areas including but not limited to digital and new media, software and digital app development, software as a service, software licensing, filming, publishing and distribution, consumer product licensing, artist commissioning, acquisitions, loan agreements.

Ms. Lewis is Council Member of the Section of the ABA’s Section of Science & Technology, Chair of the Museum and the Arts Law Committee and Member of the Copyright and Literary Property Committee of the New York City Bar Association. She is a frequent speaker for ABA programs and regional and national museum associations on legal issues facing museums, specifically as they relate to Intellectual Property and Information Technology. Ms. Lewis has published on topics including Intellectual Property, Information Technology in Museums, Cultural Property, Social Media and Copyright Law.

Ms. Lewis has been a guest lecturer for Museum Studies Programs at the Harvard Extension School and Tufts University and she has participated as a judge and brief grader for the Annual National Cultural Heritage Law Moot Court Competition, hosted by DePaul University College of Law’s Center for Art, Museum & Cultural Heritage Law and co-sponsored by the Lawyers’ Committee for Cultural Heritage Preservation.

Josh McHugh

Josh’s experience at the intersection of technology, media and business began 14 years ago at Forbes Magazine, where he chronicled the brainiacs and billionaires behind the turn-of-the-century tech upheaval, while opening Forbes’ Bay area offices.

Before joining Attention Span in 2008, he was a contributing editor at Wired Magazine and a writer for Vanity Fair, Outside, and shelfloads of other publications. He has also worked as a copywriter for advertising juggernauts Wieden Kennedy and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. A cable series based on his Wired story “Drug Test Cowboys,” about professional pharmaceutical trial participants, was sold to Comedy Central.

Josh graduated from Yale in 1992 with a BA in English. His efforts to dunk a basketball are the subject of Dunkumentary, a documentary currently making the film festival circuit. From 2010 to 2014, Josh served as president of the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco’s INFORUM division.

He was also instrumental in helping launch Michigan’s first “business court,” and remains active in statewide efforts to nurture this new approach to resolving business disputes.

Christine Perey

Christine Perey is an independent consultant with over 25 years experience serving clients in emerging technology markets.

Perey has authored 100s of feature articles and blog posts on the topics of multimedia communications and Augmented Reality. She is frequently quoted in trade and business media. She is an invited speaker at industry events and serves on panels and committees dedicated to the advancement of rich media experiences in business and consumer markets.

Since 2006 Christine has focused exclusively on Augmented Reality. That’s when the stars aligned strongly suggesting how AR could bring new value to people living and working in the physical world. This wasn’t a big leap because she had already anticipated and helped to accelerate three prior emerging technology adoption curves.

She began her career in emerging technology as the publisher and editor of the QuickTime Forum from 1991-1993 and the founder of the QuickTime Movie Festival.

In 1993, she became a leading advocate for personal video communications, working with prominent vendors to expand the market for use of digital video in daily life over the next decade. After she moved to Switzerland in 2004, Perey co-authored the Personal Mobile Video Communications market research report published by Wainhouse Research in 2005.

In 2006 and 2007 she conducted all research and prepared two Informa Telecoms & Media market research reports: Mobile Social Networking: Communities and Content on the Move, and Mobile Social Networking: Business, Technology and Mobile Operator Strategies.

Still focusing on the future of mobile computing, in 2007 Perey co-founded Mobile Monday Switzerland with Claude Florin and other volunteers.

Perey has since initiated, chaired and co-chaired dozens of community events. For example, she chaired the W3C Workshop on the Future of Social Networking, conducted January 15-16, 2009, which led to the development of the Open Social Web Incubator Group. She also was the chair of the Mobile Committee of the ISMAR 09 conference where she conducted the Mobile Magic Wand Augmented Reality Workshop. She has been a volunteer chair and participated in seven ISMAR conferences since 2006. She founded and was the organizer of the Swiss Augmented Reality Meetup Group.

Anticipating the need for developers to be able to port and re-use Augmented Reality content and experiences between different delivery platforms, she began convening meetings of the grassroots community of people advocating for open and interoperable Augmented Reality in 2009. She has since participated over 15 standards working groups and initiatives aimed at the establishment of common frameworks and specifications for interoperable AR.

When, in 2011, she foresaw the convergence of the Internet of Things and Augmented Reality, she co-founded the Internet of Things Zurich Meetup Group.

During a workshop she co-organized in 2012, Perey concluded that Augmented Reality in enterprise and industrial settings would have profound impacts on operational efficiencies. With clients and partners, she set out to accelerate this trend. Soon thereafter she formed the AR for Enterprise Alliance, an industry consortium focusing on enterprise AR adoption, and served until 2016 as the first executive director.

Perey is continues to participate in communities and working groups advancing the adoption of Augmented Reality while serving as a strategic advisor to consulting clients worldwide.
