The owners of the Atlanta Hawks have decided to sell the National Basketball Association team to an ownership group led by Alex Meruelo, a California developer and pizza chain owner, in a deal announced Monday.

DLA Piper has landed the role representing Atlanta Spirit LLC on the proposed sale of the team-the third so far this year involving an NBA franchise-and operating rights to the 19,500-seat Philips Arena in which the club plays its games.
