Seven months after filing an application to set up shop in Shanghai, Palo Alto-based Cooley has officially opened its doors in China’s largest city. The new office, the firm’s first outside the United States, is currently staffed by BRADLEY PECK and PATRICK LOOFBOURROW, two longtime Cooley partners who have relocated to Shanghai from San Diego. The firm plans to hire a Chinese lawyer soon to help give boost its credibility in the local market, according to CEO Joe Conroy.

Even absent an office, Cooley has done work in China for more than 20 years, according to a firm press release. In 1989 Cooley lawyers formed the first institutional venture fund investing in the country. Since then, attorneys with the firm have formed 43 Chinese venture capital and private equity funds and handled other various other matters in the region.
