The world’s largest chemical company just got a little bigger.

BASF, based in Ludwigshafen, Germany, has agreed to pay $3.8 billion in cash for Cognis Holding GmbH, a German producer of food and cosmetics ingredients. BASF will acquire Cognis from its current owners, Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Permira Advisors Ltd., and SV Life Sciences, the chemical company said Wednesday in a statement.
