Although Jenner & Block’s Anton Valukas has worked on dozens of corporate internal investigations, nothing else quite matches his postmortem on Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. Bankruptcy examiner Valukas and his team analyzed 6 million pages of documents and conducted more than 150 interviews. Their 2,200-page report doesn’t simply identify the Lehman estate’s potential causes of action against targets like former Lehman CEO Richard Fuld and auditor Ernst & Young LLP, it allows readers to follow, step-by-step, the disastrous decisions that sent the company into bankruptcy and nearly collapsed the economy. (Valukas declined to comment.) “I consider this to be one of the most extraordinary pieces of work product I have ever encountered,” said federal bankruptcy court judge James Peck at a March 11 hearing.
