For 14 years, John Hilson thought that he had a good client in investment firm Cerberus Capital Management L.P. The relationship was a strong one, lasting through hundreds of deals.

Until October 2009, that is. Since then, Hilson and his firm, Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker, have been fighting off a $55 million suit brought by a Cerberus subsidiary.
