Corporate America is on notice–President Barack Obama’s chief antitrust official, Christine Varney, is vowing to aggressively enforce competition laws. Varney, who left Hogan & Hartson to become head of the U.S. Department of Justice’s antitrust division, has promised increased scrutiny of the country’s biggest industries, announcing that regulators will not “sit on the sidelines any longer.”

The past few months have proved that the trust-busting tough talk is not just talk. Main Justice or the Federal Trade Commission is currently investigating International Business Machines Corporation, Intel Corporation, Sony Corporation, and agricultural behemoth Monsanto Company. In addition, the Live Nation, Inc.-Ticketmaster Entertainment Inc. deal is receiving increased scrutiny.
