The Minority Experience Survey is drawn from data gathered by The American Lawyer’s Midlevel Associates Survey in spring 2009. This year, 6,101 midlevel associates at 165 firms filled out the Midlevel Associates Survey. Respondents had the option of listing their ethnicity, and 4,592 white midlevels, 169 African American midlevels, 556 Asian American midlevels, and 211 Hispanic midlevels did so (573 respondents did not specify their race or did not fall into the above categories and were not included in the Minority Experience Survey). We chose a range of questions from the survey that dealt with economic and quality of life issues, including hours billed, workload, and anxiety levels. We then calculated the average response for each question for white respondents, African American respondents, Asian American respondents, and Hispanic respondents.
