After convincing a Washington, D.C., judge to sanction a company for violating a court order, two federal agency lawyers turned to calculating the dollar value of their time.
It’s an uncommon task for salaried attorneys in the public sector. After all, what’s the billable hour for a government lawyer? But Kathleen Banar and James Deacon, senior attorneys at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, counted their hours, determined rates between $460 and $520 an hour and arrived at an amount: $50,975.
