Wilson v. DaimlerChrysler Corp.

In sexual harassment action seeking compensatory damages in which plaintiff's disability leading to discharge was paranoid schizophrenia, plaintiff failed to show that harassment contributed to schizophrenia thereby causing discharge; summary judgment for defendant proper.

Cudahy, Circuit Judge. Donnie M. Wilson appealsa district court order granting summary judgmentin favor of DaimlerChrysler. The originalcomplaint set forth a claim of sexual harassmentand retaliatory termination in violation of TitleVII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The districtcourt entered an order and memorandum opiniongranting the defendant’s motion for summaryjudgment on the retaliatory termination claim onJune 23, 1997. The parties then cross-moved forsummary judgment on the hostile work environmentclaim, and the district court entered an ordergranting DaimlerChrysler’s motion on February 26,1998. Wilson appealed. This court affirmed thedistrict court’s grant of summary judgment on theretaliation claim, and reversed the court’s grantof summary judgment on the issue of sexualharassment. See Wilson v. Chrysler Corp., 172F.3d 500 (7th Cir. 1999). We remanded the casefor decision on the issues of whether sexualharassment occurred and, if so, whether Wilsonsuffered any damages.
