Malaysian lawyers have called off a human rights rally planned for this weekend after refusing to seek a police permit which they said violates their right to peaceful assembly, the Bar Council said Tuesday. The council, which represents 12,000 lawyers, had planned a 1.5-mile march in downtown Kuala Lumpur on Sunday as part of a program to mark International Human Rights Day. But it said it decided to cancel the march after police pressured them to get a permit for the event.
