Hank Burgoyne typically spends 10 hours a day at the office. But the name partner at six-lawyer Internet and e-commerce boutique Kronenberger Burgoyne needed to change things up a bit this year. So in a few weeks, he’ll be spending about 16 hours a day in a souped-up VW Bug in the Baja Mexico desert, muscling his way through a 1,300-mile off-road race called the Tecate SCORE Baja 1,000.

The San Francisco lawyer and a friend, Jon Knight, bought their first buggie this summer. A class 5/1600, the vehicle is built on a Volkswagen frame, standing on big off-road tires with a modified suspension that gives the wheels more clearance for travel, Burgoyne said. It is outfitted with a GPS system and a detailed map.
