The federal jury also ordered the city of Chicago to pay $500,000 in legal fees. The police department's internal affairs unit had dismissed most of McDermott's complaints, but a police spokeswoman said investigators will now revisit the case.

“I told the jury exactly what happened, and the Chicago Police Department, including one commander, one captain, two lieutenants and seven sergeants, all tried to say I wasn’t telling the truth, and the jury saw through it,” Ann McDermott said outside court.
