Gov. Jon Corzine signed a law last week that would divest many elected and appointed New Jersey officials of eligibility for pension benefits. The measure was recommended by a special legislative committee on pensions last year as a way to cut down on abuses of the Public Employee Retirement System. The law will remove elected officials and certain appointed officials from PERS and render ineligible professional-service providers who are under contract to certain state organizations.
