Several members of BellSouth Corp.’s legal department have found other posts after the telecom’s December merger with AT&T made it a regional division, AT&T Southeast. The company’s former general counsel, Marc Gary, resigned in January because, he said at the time, running the legal department of a regional subsidiary is very different from being a company’s GC. Gary recently accepted a post as the general counsel of Fidelity Investments in Boston.
He said that Fidelity, the largest mutual fund company in the country, sounds like an exciting company because it’s an “innovator in the financial services field with a tremendous expanse of legal issues.” The legal department has a staff of more than 200, he said. Boston was also a draw because he and his wife both have family there. Gary will start his new job June 4. In the meantime, he and his wife have taken an excursion to Australia, where their daughter is spending the semester at the University of Sydney.
