The New Jersey Supreme Court issued an announcement Thursday that it expects to require mandatory continuing legal education for the state's licensed lawyers, who have long resisted the idea despite adoption in 43 other jurisdictions. Former Justice Peter Verniero, chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee on CLE, says the statement leaves little doubt about the court's resolve to go ahead. With that mandate, the committee will focus on creating a program, not on studying advisability of having one, he says.

The New Jersey Supreme Court issued an historic announcement Thursday that it expects to require mandatory continuing legal education for New Jersey’s licensed lawyers, who have long resisted the idea despite adoption in 43 other jurisdictions.
“Absent a compelling case to the contrary, it expects to adopt a mandatory CLE program,” the court said as it appointed a committee to flesh out details.
