A New York family filed a lawsuit Wednesday against pet food manufacturer Menu Foods, seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages in connection with the death this month of the family's 2-year-old bull mastiff. Menu Foods has confirmed the deaths of 15 cats and one dog, and there have been widespread reports of kidney failure in other pets that have eaten the affected brands. The deaths have led to the recall of 60 million cans and pouches of pet food sold under 95 brand names.

Princess, a bull mastiff, ate Nutro food all her short life, according to her owners. She was 2 when she died of kidney failure earlier this month, days before Nutro and some other pet food brands were recalled after being linked to kidney failure in dogs and cats.
“It’s a loss that goes beyond belief,” said Frederick Bobb, of Merrick, N.Y., who buried Princess after she died of kidney failure on March 10.
