“Setting up shop as a solo practitioner is just too hard for me. There are too many variables and too much risk. It’s better to stay put, even if I’m not happy, than risk it all on a pipe dream.”

Anyone who has thought of going solo has likely had those doubts. Yet, people do go solo — lots of them. Statistics from the State Bar of Texas Department of Research and Analysis’ Attorney Statistical Profile for 2005-2006 show that 36 percent of all lawyers in Texas are solos. That’s more than 15,000 brave souls practicing on their own, about twice as many as practice at firms of 60 lawyers or more, according to the profile. After 11 years of working in offices as large as 400 lawyers and as small as two, I’ve been solo now for the past three-and-a-half years, and life couldn’t be better.
