The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to consider an appeal by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco, which sought to dismiss a claim that the company participated in a worldwide conspiracy to suppress information on smoking's health effects. The plaintiff sued in federal court in Washington state after smoking Salem cigarettes for over 40 years in the Philippines. Reynolds had argued its activities in that state were not sufficient to allow jurisdiction there. The case can now proceed in Washington state.
