New Jersey’s Supreme Court on Thursday handed Judge Wilbur Mathesius a one-month suspension without pay for making shoot-from-the hip comments that undermined the judicial system, rejecting ethics prosecutors’ call for a six-month banishment.

The justices said the Mercer County Superior Court judge’s barbs — berating a jury, criticizing death penalty jurisprudence and denigrating other judges in public — “have no place in the exercise of judicial duties.”
