A worn rug has put New York on the carpet for damages to a woman who was floored at the Department of Motor Vehicles office in Garden City. Court of Claims Judge Frank P. Milano expressed disgust at its "filthy, worn, threadbare, badly frayed, torn and ripped" condition. "If a well conditioned, appropriately maintained rug were a hearty stew, claimant's Exhibit 6 would be thin gruel," he wrote. "Exhibit 6" -- the offending rug -- was so compelling that Milano said it alone overshadowed the state's defense.
